How did hair get its color?
Then you actually first come to this question. The hair follicles from which your hair grows contain cells called ‘melanocytes’. These melanocytes produce pigment also known as ‘melanin’. That is why gray hair is generally drier and harder, which also causes it to curl more often.
How and why does grey hair develop?
Your hair follicles produce less pigment as you age. If no more melanin is produced in the hair follicles, the hair becomes pigmentless. Pigmentless hair is always white (colorless). So gray hair doesn’t really exist! The hair appears grey, because there are white hairs between your own hair color. The amount of white hair creates how “grey” the hair appears.
Some people turn gray in their twenties, while others keep their own hair color until old age. Heredity plays a major role in this. On average, a man gets his first gray hair around the age of thirty, while for women this happens around the thirty-fifth birthday. In addition to heredity, as mentioned earlier, descent also plays a role.
Grey hair dye
It is often said that stress is what causes your hair to turn gray. This is not so! After all, a hair that has grown out of the hair follicle always keeps the same color (unless you dye it) and continues to grow in that same color. So a hair cannot change color. Stress can cause excessive hair loss. And if you are already starting gray, you run the chance that the hairs that grow back are gray. Stress thus accelerates the process of graying in that sense. A condition in which hair loss is related to stress is called Telogen Effluvium.
If you suffer from a lot of stress for a longer period of time, you often see an abnormally large number of hair follicles going to sleep. When this happens, those hairs stop growing and eventually detach from the skin / hair follicles. If this happens, you will experience a lot of hair loss within a few months. Your hair falls out three times as fast as normal with this condition. The hair will grow back. But if you already had some gray hair, chances are that new hair that grows is gray. Your hair is replaced faster by the stress.
Another form of hair loss caused by stress is alopecia areata. In doing so, the body’s immune system in the hair follicles weakens, causing hair loss.
So you can already see that if you already have some gray hair, hair loss can be a cause of your hair turning gray faster. So make sure your hair doesn’t fall out to keep your original color for as long as possible!
In addition to stress, the biggest causes of hair loss that you can do something about are:
hypothyroidism: This is a thyroid disease in which your body produces too many or too few hormones. You can get medication for this.
vitamin deficiency: Are you deficient in zinc or vitamin B? There is a good chance that you will suffer from hair loss. Smokers, in particular, are at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency.
too much styling: If you often expose your hair to heat and chemicals, it can weaken your hair to the point that it breaks or falls out.
Can you prevent grey hair?
In addition to maintaining a healthy lifestyle including good nutrition and preventing your hair from falling out, there is unfortunately nothing to do against gray hair. There are supplements for gray hair, but there is no scientific evidence that they actually work. Because gray hair cannot be prevented, many people start by dyeing their hair.
